Dog Grape & Raisin Toxicity Calculator β€” Kidney Injury Risk

Did your pup eat grapes, raisins or a product containing cream of tartar? This emergency calculator assesses acute kidney injury risk using the latest 2024 tartaric-acid research and the Merck Veterinary Manual grape toxicosis thresholds. Any amount can be dangerous β€” there is no confirmed safe dose. Call your veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately; the tool includes one-tap dial.

grapes
1 tbsp raisins β‰ˆ 3-5 grape-equivalents. 1 tsp cream of tartar β‰ˆ 10 grapes. When in doubt, overestimate.
2024 research (Downs et al.) confirms tartaric acid as the toxic agent. No safe dose β€” any ingestion is a vet call. Raisins concentrate the toxin 4–5Γ— vs fresh grapes.
Estimated risk
Minimal risk
Dose
367.4 mg/kg
5,000 mg total

What to do

Any grape/raisin ingestion warrants veterinary consultation.

Symptoms to watch for

  • No toxicity at zero exposure

Grape toxicity terminology

Tartaric acid
Confirmed 2022-2024 toxin in grapes; cream of tartar (potassium bitartrate) carries the same risk.
AKI (acute kidney injury)
Sudden kidney failure; the primary risk from grape ingestion, presenting 24-72 hr post-exposure.
Anuria / oliguria
No or low urine output β€” the warning sign that kidneys have shut down.
Activated charcoal
First-line decontamination given within 2 hr of ingestion; binds tartaric acid in the gut.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many grapes are toxic to dogs?

There is no reliably 'safe' dose. Per Merck Veterinary Manual: more than 1 grape per 4.5 kg (10 lb) of body weight may trigger kidney injury. However, individual sensitivity varies β€” some dogs develop failure after 1-2 grapes while others tolerate larger amounts. Always treat ingestion as an emergency.

Why are grapes toxic to dogs?

Recent research (Downs et al., Veterinary Record 2024; JAVMA 2022) identifies tartaric acid and potassium bitartrate as the likely toxins. Dogs lack the organic acid transporters needed to excrete tartaric acid, allowing it to accumulate and damage proximal renal tubular cells.

Are raisins more toxic than grapes?

Yes. Raisins concentrate the tartaric acid 4-5Γ— compared to fresh grapes by weight, so a small handful of raisins can be far more dangerous than the same weight in grapes.

What are symptoms of grape poisoning in dogs?

Within 24 hours: vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, decreased appetite. Within 24-72 hours: increased thirst and urination (then decreased or no urination), abdominal pain, elevated creatinine and BUN on bloodwork. Kidney failure can be irreversible.

What should I do if my dog ate grapes?

Call your vet or ASPCA Animal Poison Control (888-426-4435) immediately. Induced vomiting within 2 hours plus activated charcoal is usually recommended. Aggressive IV fluid therapy for 48-72 hours is standard treatment.

Are cream of tartar and tamarind also toxic?

Yes β€” they contain tartaric acid too. Cream of tartar in snickerdoodles and homemade play-dough has caused grape-like toxicity in dogs. Tamarind (Vitis) is also reported toxic per Merck.
